Heat pump not heating, cooling, or switching right
Heat pumps are more complicated than standalone furnaces + ACs. They have to reverse, defrost, and (on dual-fuel setups) hand off to a gas furnace at the right temperature. That means more places where things can go slightly wrong without a full system failure.
What we diagnose
Reversing valve failures: the system gets stuck in heat or cool mode. Diagnosed by pressure readings + solenoid testing. Defrost cycle problems: outdoor coil ices over and stays that way, usually a failed defrost board or sensor. Balance point / compressor lockout: the heat pump keeps running on days it shouldn’t, or the gas furnace kicks in when the heat pump should be doing the work. We recalibrate during the repair visit.
Dual-fuel quirks we see a lot
A lot of dual-fuel complaints trace back to thermostat configuration rather than equipment failure. We verify the thermostat is configured for your exact setup (heat pump type, aux heat source, emergency heat wiring), and we confirm the balance point + lockout temperature are set for Northern Kentucky’s climate, not factory defaults.
What sets this heat pump repair job apart.
We install heat pumps every week. The tech on your repair call is the same tech who would install your next system.
Dual-fuel balance-point + lockout recalibration included in most repair visits.
Defrost cycle diagnostics, reversing-valve testing, and smart-thermostat config all handled on the first visit.
We diagnose first, then quote the repair in writing before any work starts.

Heat pump replacement
If your heat pump is well along in years, we'll lay out the repair against a new system so you can weigh comfort, efficiency, and the long-term cost.

A lot of heat-pump issues trace back to thermostat configuration. A proper dual-fuel thermostat with balance-point and lockout settings often solves odd behavior for good.

heat pump repair, quick answers.
- A normal defrost cycle runs the outdoor coil warm every hour or so to melt frost. Occasional icing is fine. If the outdoor unit is coated in ice for hours, that's a failed defrost board or sensor. Call us.
- Almost always a thermostat configuration or balance-point issue. The dual-fuel threshold shipped from the factory is rarely right for Northern Kentucky, so we recalibrate to around 35°F balance point and 25°F compressor lockout in most installs.
- Yes. We work on Tempstar, Carrier, Trane, Lennox, Bryant, Goodman, Rheem, Mitsubishi, Daikin, and Fujitsu. First visit is a slightly longer baseline (balance point, refrigerant charge, airflow) so we catch anything the original installer missed.
